A CMMC Level 2 assessment is not an exploratory conversation — it is a structured verification of 110 requirements, run by a certified third-party assessment organization (C3PAO), with your contracts riding on the outcome. The companies that pass comfortably are the ones for whom the assessment is the least interesting week of the project.
Before: the readiness phase
- Confirm your assessment scope: the systems, people, and facilities that store, process or transmit CUI.
- Freeze a complete System Security Plan — assessors navigate your environment through it.
- Map every requirement to its evidence: a policy, a configuration export, a log sample, a screenshot.
- Score yourself with the official assessment methodology and close anything below target.
- Brief the staff who will be interviewed; consistent answers matter more than polished ones.
During: what the assessors do
Expect a mix of documentation review, interviews and technical demonstration. Assessors triangulate: the policy says MFA is enforced, the admin shows the enforcement setting, the log shows it working. Where the three disagree, the requirement is not met. Keep a scribe in every session and log every artifact request — a fast, organized response is itself evidence of maturity.
After: findings and the POA&M window
A limited set of lower-weight requirements can sit on a Plan of Action & Milestones for up to 180 days after the assessment. Treat that window as a sprint with a hard deadline: the certification isn't final until the close-out. Then move straight into maintenance — the certificate is valid for three years, but the affirmations you sign along the way are annual.
Teams that treat CMMC as an operating rhythm rather than an event pass the next assessment with a fraction of the effort.
